TeamBretMichaels.com / LifeRocksFoundation.org Story: Darcie Turns Cancer Into Her Calling
I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in February 2008. I was 31 years old and breast cancer had never crossed my mind. Since my diagnosis, I have had 2 reoccurrences, 7 surgeries, 8 rounds of chemotherapy, 66 radiation treatments and countless tests and body scans. I am finally cancer free and have been since June 2011. I am beyond happy! I am a fighter and survivor! Cancer will always be a part of my life, but I will never let it define me.
Cancer has brought some good to my life along with the challenges. It has taught me to appreciate the little things. Focus on what’s really important. It’s not lots of money, fancy things, or power; it’s TIME! Time is truly a gift and it should not be wasted. Spend time with the ones you love because however much we want it to, it won’t last forever. I cherish every minute, especially the time spent with my son Dylan. Dylan is my life’s greatest work. I love him beyond words and I must fight to be here to see him grow up.
I also devote more time to fundraising for charities. After my diagnosis, the importance of fundraising became much more personal. I participate in the American Cancer society Making Strides Against Breast cancer walks, St. Judes, March of Dimes, Vickies Angels (local charity that helps cancer patients pay their day to day bills during treatment) and any type of military fundraising events. I do as much as I can to help make a difference. There is never a donation ( or deed) too small. Every penny truly makes a difference and can change someone’s world.
